How we verify our materials, support our artisans, and ensure product safety

Angkor Pillows makes specific claims about our materials, certifications, and ethical practices. This page explains what those claims mean, how they are verified, and what customers should know.

OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Certified

What it means: Our silk products have been independently tested and verified to be free from harmful substances, including restricted chemicals, heavy metals, and allergens. This certification confirms that our products are safe for direct skin contact, including for sensitive skin.

Who certifies it: OEKO-TEX is a globally recognized textile safety certification system administered by independent testing institutes. The standard is managed by the International Association for Research and Testing in the Field of Textile and Leather Ecology, headquartered in Zurich, Switzerland.

What is tested: Raw materials and finished products are tested against a catalog of over 100 substances known to be harmful to human health. Products must pass every test to receive the label.

100% Cambodian Silk — Zero Chinese Materials

What it means: Every Angkor Pillows product uses silk sourced exclusively from Cambodian silk farms. We do not import silk from China, Vietnam, India, or any other country. We do not use synthetic silk or blended materials for our silk products.

Where the silk comes from: Our silk is sourced from farms in Cambodia's Angkor heartland — the rural regions surrounding the ancient temples of Angkor Wat in Siem Reap Province. This region has a centuries-old silk weaving tradition.

What makes it different: Cambodian golden silk is produced by a species of silkworm native to Cambodia (Bombyx mori variant) that naturally produces golden-colored thread. Unlike white Chinese mulberry silk, Cambodian golden silk does not require dyeing to achieve its characteristic warm gold color.

Fair-Trade Aligned

What it means: Angkor Pillows is committed to fair-trade principles. Our artisans receive fair wages that meet or exceed local living wage standards. They work in safe, healthy conditions and are treated as valued creative partners, not factory laborers.

How we practice it:

Why “aligned” and not “certified”: Formal Fair Trade certification (e.g., Fairtrade International) is designed primarily for commodity agriculture and large-scale manufacturing. Our production model — individual artisans working on traditional looms in their homes — does not fit neatly into existing certification frameworks. We follow fair-trade principles in practice and are transparent about our labor practices.

Hand-Woven on Traditional Looms

What it means: Every silk panel in our products is individually hand-woven by a skilled artisan on a traditional wooden loom. We do not use power looms, automated weaving machines, or factory production lines.

How it is done: Artisans use the same weaving techniques that have been practiced in Cambodia for centuries, including the UNESCO-recognized Khmer hol (ikat) dyeing and weaving method. Each piece takes days to complete.

Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Practices

Materials: Silk is a natural, biodegradable protein fiber. Our golden silk requires no chemical dyeing. When colors are added, natural or low-impact dyes are used.

Production: Hand-weaving on wooden looms uses no electricity and produces zero industrial waste. This is among the lowest-impact textile production methods available.

Packaging: We use sustainable, eco-friendly packaging materials for all shipments.

Supply Chain Transparency

Our supply chain is short and direct:

  1. Silk farms in Cambodia's Angkor heartland raise silkworms and harvest cocoons
  2. Artisans hand-reel, spin, dye (when needed), and weave the silk on traditional looms
  3. Angkor Pillows assembles finished products and handles quality control in Phnom Penh
  4. Customers receive products via our Phnom Penh showroom or international DDP shipping

There are no anonymous factories, no third-party manufacturers, and no untraceable supply chain steps between the silkworm and the finished product.
